Did feign that Orpheus drew trees, stones and floods,
since nought so stockish, hard and full of rage,
But musick for the time doth change his nature.
The man that hath no Musick in himself
nor ist not mov`d with concord of sweet Sounds,
Is fit for treasons, Stratagems, and Spoils;
The motions of his Spirit are dull as night,
and his affections dark as Erebus: Let no such man be trusted

Sebbene non datata, è verosimile che questa nota sia stata scritta a Londra nel 1764-1765; la carta è infatti simile a quella delle note di viaggio di Leopold dello stesso periodo. Si veda: Töpelmann, «The Mozart Family and Empfindsamkeit», p. 149. È possibile che la fonte di Leopold fosse l`edizione delle opere di Shakespeare in sette volumi pubblicata nel 1733 da Lewis Theobald, che reca la parola nor all`inizio del verso 5; l`edizione del 1744 di Thomas Hammer, Alexander Pope e Nicholas Rowe porta invece and, come nella traduzione italiana citata. Il testo completo dell`edizione Theobald recita: «Therefore, the Poet / Did feign that Orpheus drew trees, stones, and floods; / Since nought so stockish, hard and full of rage, / But musick for the time doth change his nature. / The man that hath no musick in himself, / Nor is not mov`d with concord of sweet sounds, / Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; / The motions of his spirit are dull as night, / And his affections dark as Erebus: / Let no such man be trusted» (The Works of Shakspeare [sic], ed.
